The Invisible Threat

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels like natural gas, propane, and wood. In the home, the most common sources are faulty furnaces, boilers, and gas water heaters.

Protecting Your Family

• Install CO Detectors: This is your first line of defense. Install battery-operated or hard-wired CO detectors with battery backup on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
• Annual Furnace Maintenance: Have a licensed HVAC technician inspect your heating system every year. They will check the heat exchanger for cracks, which is the most common way CO escapes into the home's airstream.
• Ensure Proper Venting: Make sure the exhaust vents for your furnace and water heater are clear of snow, ice, and debris.
