Powering the Chill
While furnaces in Calgary are almost exclusively powered by natural gas, air conditioners operate differently.
The Electric Truth
Residential central air conditioners are fully electric appliances. They do not use natural gas. The electricity powers the compressor (which pumps the refrigerant) and the fan motors (which blow air across the coils).
The Confusion
The confusion often arises because the air conditioner relies on the furnace's blower motor to circulate the cool air through the home's ductwork. Even though the furnace is involved in the distribution of the air, the actual cooling process is entirely electric.
