The Importance of Correct Filter Placement
Furnace filters are directional. They are designed to catch dust and debris on one side while allowing clean air to pass through the other. Installing a filter backward restricts airflow and forces your furnace to work harder.
Finding the Airflow Direction
- Look for the Arrows: Every filter has arrows printed on the frame indicating the direction of airflow.
- Follow the Air: Air flows from your return ducts, through the filter, into the furnace, and then out to the supply ducts. The arrows on the filter should point TOWARD the furnace.
A Simple Rule of Thumb
If the filter slot is located between the main return duct and the furnace body, the arrows should point toward the furnace body. If you're unsure, our technicians are happy to show you during your next maintenance visit.
