Plumbing and The Importance of Keeping Fit & Healthy

Hi there! I’m George Pinel and I started this post to talk about aging and fitness and to provide some helpful insights I’ve gained after more than 40 years as a plumber and gas fitter.

My introduction to the trade started when I was six and my dad started a plumbing company.

Within a few years, I asked if I could come along and help him as it did not seem fair to me that he worked while I watched television.

You see, he was in the service plumbing business where we worked in residential homes and I thought I could help out and get to hang out with my dad as well. It is something I think many kids miss out on these days – sons or daughters being able to work directly and learn skills from their moms and dads.

My dad was “old school” so if I wanted to work with him I needed to be able to keep up, not complain and stay on helping until the job was done. The reward after was usually a trip to a local “mom and pop” coffee shop for soda and burgers.

At 12 years old I was ready to take on some of the harder labour tasks like breaking up concrete floors to add plumbing in for a basement bathroom and I had learned enough that I knew most of the fittings and could handle tools as well.

Again, working alongside someone 36 years older than me helped me benefit from both his knowledge and experience and also his very strong work ethic.

When the job was done, he would stand back and say that it was good and to be proud of a good job. He also always said that maintenance is the best prevention, so that is why we send out service reminders to look after your equipment.

Now at 58 years of age, the years of doing a lot of hard physical work have taken a toll on my body which I have tried to counteract by working out on a regular basis for many years – especially building my strength with a rigorous program of weightlifting, squats, dead lifts, bench presses as well as daily stretching and some cardio as well.

Cardio is not my favourite but we all have exercises we prefer – for me, running not so much LOL.

However, like so many people during Covid I found myself mainly working behind a desk for two years with no real options to maintain my routine of workouts.

Wow! When they say sitting behind a desk is the new smoking, I learned it the hard way! I was so glad to finally be able to return to the gym eventually and get serious again about getting and staying in shape.

I could not believe the difference it made to me physically and mentally. It has now been the better part of 18 months back in training and I’m so glad I have persevered.

There were a lot of sore spots to work through initially and I also needed an operation to repair a hernia for the second time but to me, these were minor setbacks on my journey back to fitness and health.

I have recovered to the point that I am excited to further challenge myself by entering my first-ever powerlifting event this May in Lethbridge.

After a lifetime of hard physical work and a routine of years of physical fitness that was setback after about 2 years of inactivity, I would encourage everyone, no matter what age, to build and maintain your physical health as best you can.

I have experienced so many benefits not least of which are enhanced mobility and movement, improved mental health and new friendships with people with similar fitness goals. It is great to start early in a fitness routine but I know it is never too late to start one and the rewards and results are worth the effort.

My career has also been such a blessing to me – forming relationships with wonderful clients that I have come to know over many years, including some who literally watched me grow up.

The hard physical work has helped me to maintain a body that at times feels maybe a bit like an old rusted car but once that engine gets running it moves along smooth and steady. I am looking forward to the challenge of my first powerlifting event and I’m even more excited to look forward to the next twenty or so years.

Thank you to all the wonderfully loyal clients who have supported me throughout my career and to the many friends and trainers that have helped me on my journey back to fitness and health
