ONE Change To Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly, Improve Your Health and Cut Household Costs!

We are so lucky to live in a place where the tap water is clean and safe. Unfortunately, as Calgarians, we have very hard water, or, in other words, water that is high in mineral content. This means that while doing our household chores, we battle limescale (the white build-up in showers, on faucets and on glass) and use more cleaning products (containing more fillers) than our friends with soft water, and for all our trouble we don’t even get to enjoy the comfort of soft water when it comes time for a shower or bath.

The hardness of a municipality’s water is determined by the levels of calcium and magnesium dissolved in it. This City of Calgary webpage explains in more detail and offers measurements of how hard the water in Calgary is.

Improve Your Quality of Life With Soft Water

Detergents, shampoos and soaps often contain all sorts of fillers — optical brighteners, fabric softeners, water softening agents, sudsing agents, and anti-static agents along with plenty of other additives, many of which are added to ensure the product will work effectively when used in hard water. Soft water, on the other hand, cleans dishes, hair and clothing very effectively with pure soap, free of fillers and additives, and much less of it, at that.

An independent research study by the Water Quality Research Foundation entitled Softened Water Benefits found that homeowners needed 50% less laundry detergent when using soft compared to hard water, and 70% less dishwasher detergent. Not only that, but the soft water achieved the same results and reduction in detergent use even when cooler water! This reduction in water temperature as well as in the amount of detergent is not only good for the earth, it’s great for your bank account, too!

Add to that the fact that all those fillers and additives that are left out of the equation are also very harmful to our waterways, and you can see how soft water helps us to conserve a cleaner, less polluted earth for all of us.
