We are so lucky to live in a place where the tap water is clean and safe. Unfortunately, as Calgarians, we have very hard water, or, in other words, water that is high in mineral content.
Houses are now built to be nearly air-tight, which is positive for two reasons: first, it means that our homes are less drafty and we lose less heat through our walls and ceilings; second, it means that we have more control over air flow and humidity. However, an air-tight house without proper ventilation, air filtration and humidity control can be a recipe for disaster!
Have you been wondering if your water heater is almost ready to give out? If you have had your water heater for 8-10 years, you would be wise to plan to replace it sooner rather than later — likely in the coming year or two. But did you know that when temperatures are especially cold — as they have been in Calgary this month — your water heater is more likely than other times to quit for good?
You may not have heard of a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) but maintaining it properly is key for the good of your furnace and the air you breathe every day.
